About

This blog is for anyone who wants to learn more about collecting art, but isn't sure where to start.

If  you're like me and didn't study art in college, the language of artists, galleries, museums, and art fairs can seem impenetrable and elitist. Few of us feel comfortable asking questions that might make us sound dumb.

But the art world is changing. As it expands online, the art community has become more transparent and more welcoming -- both to new artists and to people who may never have considered buying original art before. Entrepreneurs and technology firms are developing new ways for people to discover, study, experience, and collect art.

In the physical world, we no longer have to visit galleries or museums to see art. Art is all around us -- in hotel lobbies, airports, restaurants, and bars. Community arts organizations conduct artist studio tours or showcase new and emerging artists at local fairs and festivals.

On this blog, you will find interviews with art-world experts, experienced collectors, and art-technology entrepreneurs who will explain how to discover and buy art that you love. They explain such things as how to train your eye, avoid paying more than you should, and preserve the value of your art over time.

My Qualifications
I am a freelance writer and wanna-be art collector. Although I have no formal training in art, I do admire art (and artists).

As a journalist, I have been writing about the intersection of technology and arts since the mid-1990s, when I  wrote magazine articles about how artists, photographers, and printmakers were using digital imaging and printing technologies to create and reproduce their works.

In the course of researching articles about how these new technologies would disrupt traditional practices, I asked gallery owners, artists, and printmakers some pretty basic questions about the art market. I was relieved that so many experts were happy to answer whatever dumb question I asked.

Some experts I interviewed for my article "Art Collecting 101" gave me so much information, I couldn't fit it all in the 1,000-word article I submitted to American Way magazine. So I am sharing some of their tips here. Ideally, their advice will help you feel more confident about buying art that you love.

The Internet is enabling tens of thousands of talented artists from around the world to show their work. Wouldn't it be wonderful if more of this work found  its way out of their studios and onto the walls of the homes and offices of people who loved it?
